Ian Tarves has been in the wood products industry for over 20 years. After attending the British Columbia Institute of Technology, studying lumber and plywood technology, Ian worked in the wood products industry throughout several B.C. locales prior to moving to Edson in 1996.

As manager of production at Yellowhead Wood Products, Ian brings with him a wealth of secondary manufacturing experience, including the experience of having run his own business within the industry. At Yellowhead Wood Products he presently oversees 16 employees - always stressing safety and quality.

"A safe environment and a quality product are of primary importance, everything else is secondary," Ian says.

Stressing safety and quality is something Ian does on an ongoing basis, holding weekly meetings with employees, focussing on those very issues.

"It's important the employees know what we did right and what went wrong. We discuss quality and safety and what we can do to improve overall production for ourselves and our customers."

Improving production, quality and safety goes a long way toward improving the overall competitiveness of Yellowhead Wood Products.

Ian says the employees of Yellowhead are masters of their own destiny as they continue to define the company and their contribution through providing specialized services.

"In the secondary wood manufacturing business, we're in a position to be able to place ourselves within niches which other companies are not able to occupy."
