Service always comes first. 'You have to give people what they want, when they want it, so that in the end, everyone's happy.' If any statement could sum up Raymond Harvey's approach to business, that's it.

Ray works as the manager of purchasing, parts, shipping and receiving at Yellowhead Wood Products. A part of the team at Yellowhead Wood Products for the past six years, Ray has been in and out of the wood business for over 20 years. Providing services and products to major Alberta sawmills, and to other wood-based manufacturers is a task Ray delivers with a style, a natural humour and a good-natured wit that is widely enjoyed amongst Yellowhead's clientelle.

'We provide the service and our clients don't expect a hassle. We keep an eye on their inventory, and over the years, we've learned to keep a certain amount of product on the ground to stay prepared and provide that no-hassle service.'

Ray had his start in the industry with Erith Tie Company in 1982. Erith Tie, established by Richard Corser, was renamed Sundance Forest Products and later sold to outside interests.

The relationship between Yellowhead Wood Products and Sundance Forest Industries remains very close. Along with liaising with mechanics, electricians and truckers associated with undertaking daily operations at the mill, Ray also maintains the computer database at Yellowhead Wood Products.

'The computer work is a lot of what I do. All purchases and spare parts are kept on a database and through that database, we can access how much each part costs and what the exact part number is. This allows the company to cut down on excess miscellaneous parts while keeping those parts in stock that we know we'll need. It all helps to increase efficiency and keep costs down.'
